Necessary Mutilation

It is late, for me, but we just returned from Aspire’s annual Art and Wine benefit. If you are not already familiar, check out this wonderful place at its website (aspirewny.org). I have worked here 15 years, and each September I am proud all over again at what a fine and talented group of individuals I work with, and of how much I love the people that we serve.

This benefit is an opportunity for the individuals who participate in the art programs of Aspire to show and sell their works. It is a formal affair with wine-tasting, gourmet food, and incredible talent of every kind. Tonight’s artwork, framed and auctioned off, brought in several hundred dollars, and some pieces nearly two thousand dollars apiece. My colleagues and friends Nancy and Charlie purchased two paintings from the art “store” there, and were pleased to know the artists as the same individuals that Aspire serves. It amazes me as well how someone who may have such limited or perhaps spastic movements can create such beautiful works.
