OK, I admit that I am happy about losing another half pound, despite the method (see yesterday’s post). At this point, I’ll take what I can get. I find myself very eager to be down 40 lbs. by Tuesday (6/23), which will be my eight-week anniversary post-op. I know that it’s just a number and all, but 40 sounds so much better to me than the 30’s that I feel as if I’ve been in forever.

I have some great news today! First of all, I have now slept the last two nights without my C-PAP machine, which has been extraordinarily liberating and awesome! As the mask had been wearing out, causing it to whistle, blow air into my eyeballs, and other annoying things, I have been struggling with it for a while now. Two nights ago I decided to see if I could remain alive in my sleep without it, and used Tom’s feedback about whether I was snorkeling and gasping for air or snoring or sputtering as a gauge to whether I can now possibly do without the mask. Tom swears that although I “snored just a little,” he didn’t hear me stop breathing like he used to, and that I didn’t even make those horrible strangulation sounds like I used to before being diagnosed with sleep apnea. And, I woke feeling well rested! (Poor Tom on the other hand got little sleep, as he kept waking to do his homework and make sure I was still alive and breathing every once in a while, as instructed!)

I am dehydrating to death as I type this … and can hardly wait until my half hour since dinner is up so I can take miniscule but frequent sips of anything liquid to keep myself from shriveling further! God I hate this “rule!”

After a very restless night last night, I am tired today and surprised that I successfully pushed myself to head straight to the Center after work, and exercise. Now that it is over I am pleased that I did this, and I can carve another notch in my workout belt. One more day and they will be compelled to give me my $10 deposit back. Oh, and I will be that much more fit and trim. God, my attitude sucks! Does everyone have to bribe themselves to do such things?

I just got home from a long and confusing staff meeting in which many changes our Health Care Center is undergoing were discussed. It has been a long and wearisome day, made harder by my friend and colleague Nancy’s announcement that she had to put her young cat to sleep today. Apparently he went into sudden kidney failure and became acutely symptomatic and couldn’t be saved.
Now I am weary in body and spirit. I haven’t mustered the energy or wherewithall to exercise or even walk in days now, and must try to do better by this soon. Honestly, I don’t know how some people manage to juggle families, careers, and themselves … I can barely manage just me!
I also don’t think that I drank or ate enough today — and will have to try to do both after I post this. All I ate was some leftover oatmeal for breakfast, two cheese sticks spaced throughout the long work day, a banana, and a few raspberries. Hardly any protein even. Bad me! At least I took my vitamins.
Not much else to say today, so I guess I’ll give us all a break and make this a brief one. Sorry, no real “juiciness” today!

OK, I admit it. I’ve reached a new low in more ways than one.
Today I was off from work, and spent much of my day trolling support groups (see My Favorite Links on this site) for help about my gastronomical concerns of late. Read the title and you’ll get the picture. Interestingly, someone answered me that grape Kool-Aid can cause this! Who’da thunk?! And don’t you know that as I wrote and read this, I had a glass of diet grape Kool-Aid by my side. How freaky!

Today being Sunday, and given the relatively big weight loss I’ve had so far this week (and today!), I am in a cheerful and grateful mood and want to post a little differently today to acknowledge some wonders and pleasures of this phase of my journey.
First off, I woke up feeling blessed by the wonderful friendship I enjoyed with Debbie and Nancy last night, and the engaging and enjoyable dinner out that they, Tom, and I had together. I ordered a Spanish omelette (yes, for dinner!), and enjoyed it immensely. Full of beans and salsa and cheese and peppers, I felt that it was delicious and protein-packed. I had a few bites of the accompanying hash browns, and was very satisfied in every way. I appreciate how helpful and supportive Tom and all my friends are, and how we are able to talk or not talk about my surgery, weight, or diet, at any given time. Sometimes they feel fit to “lecture” me about what I might do differently, like exercise more or this way and not that or eat less or different stuff or whatever — but I take it all in stride as the intended helpfulness of people who care. Afterwards we shopped together at my favorite place: the Chrismas Tree Shop, which has all my favorite inexpensive finds I so love to buy. This includes many exotic flavors of decaf coffee that I have a hard time finding anwhere else.

OK, so I’ve lost a half a pound since yesterday, but I think I’ve transfered my food addiction to garage sales! Tom and I ran out early today and found numerous bargains (i.e., stuff we didn’t really need and wouldn’t have thought to buy except that they were so cheap we coudn’t resist). Now, when we realize later this year that we can’t really use any of it, we can sell it for half as much at our own garage sale in the fall. Yippee — ain’t “bargains” fun? The good news is that many of the sales were part of block extravaganzas and required a lot of walking from house to house, often loaded down with crap from the houses along the way. I think this constitutes my exercise requirements for the day, don’t you?! Plus, we found eight-pound hand weights (two for a dollar!) and then an exercise ball kit with recipes and everything included (brand new, which it will also probably still be when I sell it at our garage sale!) for only $5. Whoopee!

Today I left work early (which I can do since I am a consultant / per-diem employee and make my own schedule!) and actually chose to go to the Center’s gym and work out!

Well, I managed to lose the 1.5 pounds that I had gained plus a half pound more! However, I just returned from quite a dinner out and now have probably regained it all!
It seems that I had my first stressful, long, difficult day back to work today, and came home late and famished. Tom and I decided on Old Country Buffet, and I thought this might be as inexpensive and decent a dinner choice as any – minus the opportunity for leftovers which I don’t want anyway since I am still working on some from several meals back.
